WRITERS ALREADY RESPECTED
WAR started appearing after writer's names roughly around 1972-73. (According to graffiti lour it was coined by WG and LAZAR) Its original intended use was to be an indicator of status. It was to be written after the names of writers whose accomplishments had gained the respect of the writing community.

Many writers of lesser status levels felt free to append their names with the prestigious acronym. As time went on unofficial inductees altered the definition of WAR. Within these splinter groups it became "Writers Are Respected". Though not validated by WAR's founders this new variation on the phrase simply called for respect among writers and was more flexible in regard to who could and could not write it. Another variation was WAR backwards "Respect All Writers".
