Hip Hop Legend DJ Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC passed away October 30, 2002.
Our memories of Jam Master Jay:
@149st had the great honor of having Jam Master Jay spin on the wheels of steel for the opening of our exhibition Where Were You in '82 -- A retrospective of 1982 Street Culture last December at the SOMA gallery in New York City. Needless to say, he turned the party out!
Despite his celebrity status, he remained very down to earth, greeting fans with great warmth. He never declined a request for an autograph or to pose for a photograph. We were grateful for his presence.
We are deeply saddened to hear of his passing.
His music, spirit and memory will live on.
We extend our prayers and condolences to his family and friends.
